The Podcast Gear Guide: Microphones, Headphones and Editing Software
A plain-English walkthrough of what to buy first, what to skip, and which editing tools are worth learning…
Launching a podcast feels big because it is actually a dozen small decisions stacked together. Taken in order, each one is easy. This guide walks the whole path — from choosing your niche to pressing publish — the same sequence we use with every new Tapeglow show.
Pick the overlap between what you know deeply and what a specific audience desperately wants. "Business advice" is a crowd; "pricing tactics for freelance designers" is a community. Name the listener, write down their three biggest questions, and let those questions become your first ten episodes.
Decide length, structure, and rhythm before you record: solo or interview, weekly or seasonal, twenty minutes or sixty. Write a one-page format sheet — cold open, segments, closer — and test it with a pilot recording. Shows with a format survive; shows with vibes stall at episode six.
Choose a searchable name, design cover art that reads at thumbnail size, and record three episodes before launch day — not one. A small backlog removes deadline panic and lets you launch with a bingeable shelf. Our creative development and recording teams exist for exactly this stretch.
Submit your feed to Apple, Spotify, and YouTube at least a week before launch, then release two or three episodes on day one. Announce everywhere your future listeners already gather, ask early fans for ratings in week one, and clip every episode for social discovery.
The takeaway: niche down, format first, bank three episodes, launch with a splash. Do those four things and you have already outlasted most new shows.
